Decoding Regulations and Structural Gaps in India’s Civil Aviation Sector

At the beginning of December 2025, India’s civil aviation company IndiGo cancelled more than 4,500 flights without prior clear notice. Due to this sudden decision, thousands of passengers were stranded at various airports, leading to serious disruption and passenger inconvenience.

  • The root cause of this crisis was considered to be IndiGo’s failure to properly comply with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) Flight Duty Time Limitations (FDTL).
  • As a result, there was a shortage of pilots and other staff, and considering the large-scale cancellations and passenger distress across the country, the DGCA had to grant temporary relaxations.
