Rights of Gig Workers in India

In March 2026, the Ministry of Labour and Employment informed the Rajya Sabha that, for the first time, the Code on Social Security, 2020 provides a formal definition of ‘gig workers’ and ‘platform workers’, along with related provisions; the Code came into force on 21 November 2025.

  • An estimated 7.7 million people are engaged as gig workers in India, including delivery riders, cab drivers, freelancers, and logistics personnel.
