National Register of Citizens (NRC)

The National Register of Citizens (NRC) is an official record of those who are legal Indian citizens. The register was first prepared after the 1951 Census of India and since then it has not been updated until recently.

  • National Population Register (NPR) is a register of usual residents of the country. It is mandatory for every usual resident of India to register in the NPR. It includes both Indian citizens as well as a foreign citizen.
  • Constitutional Provisions (Citizenship): Part II of the Constitution (Article 5 to 11) talks about citizenship.
