Buddhist Triangle Sites of Odisha Join UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List

In January 2026, UNESCO officially accepted the Serial Nomination of Odisha’s Buddhist Triangle Sites into India’s Tentative List for World Heritage status.

About the Sites

  • The Buddhist Triangle Sites refers to a serial cultural cluster of 3 major Buddhist monastic stupa complexes in Odisha located in:
    • Lalitgiri (Cuttack)
    • Udayagiri, and Ratnagiri (Jajpur)
  • The sites are historically related and demonstrate the progressive development of schools of thought:
    • Lalitgiri as one of the earliest Theravada centres (2nd- 3rd century BCE onwards),
    • Udayagiri as a Mahayana and later Vajrayana establishment, and
    • Ratnagiri as a major Vajrayana epicentre under the patronage of the Bhaumakara dynasty.
