Recently, the conferment of the Padma Shri award on tribal artist Krishnan Raghavan, popularly known as ‘Kitna’, has brought national attention to the fragile legacy of Kurumba painting in the Nilgiris.
About Kurumba Painting
Origin
- Kurumba painting is a prehistoric art form, estimated to be over 3,000 years old.
- It originates from the Kurumba tribe inhabiting regions of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Karnataka.
- Traditionally, the art was created on rocks and cave walls in the high hills of the Nilgiris.
Raw Materials and Tools
- The paintings use natural pigments sourced from forests.
