Delimitation & Representation - Demographic Debates

Delimitation is the redrawing of Lok Sabha and assembly constituencies to ensure equal representation, based on population. The last exercise was completed in 2008 under the Delimitation Commission, while the 84th Amendment (2001) froze delimitation till 2026.

With southern states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu (TFR: ~1.8) achieving population control, and northern states like Bihar (TFR: 3.0) still growing rapidly, the upcoming delimitation raises concerns of reduced political voice for progressive states despite contributing over 30% of India’s GDP.
