Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS)

On 1st February 2026, In the Union Budget 2026–27, the Government of India announced an outlay of Rs. 20,000 crore over 5 years to scale up Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) technologies to help reduce industrial emissions and support India’s climate targets.

What is CCUS?

  • Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) refer to a group of technologies that capture carbon dioxide (CO₂) from industrial sources before it enters the atmosphere, and then either reuse it or store it permanently.

Three main stages:

  • Capture: CO₂ collected from sources like power plants, steel and cement factories.
  • Utilisation: CO₂ converted into useful products ....
