L&T Wins Contract to Build India’s LIGO Observatory in Maharashtra

On 24th February 2026, Larsen & Toubro announced that it has secured a contract from the Department of Atomic Energy to construct India’s LIGO observatory at Aundha in Maharashtra’s Hingoli district, with completion scheduled within 48 months.

What is LIGO?

  • Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) is a highly sensitive scientific instrument designed to detect gravitational waves, the tiny ripples in space-time predicted by Albert Einstein.
  • Gravitational waves are generated by events such as black hole mergers and neutron star collisions.
  • Uses laser interferometry to measure minute distortions in space-time.
  • Detects disturbances smaller than the width of a proton.
