Global Drought Outlook
On 17 June 2025, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) released its Global Drought Outlook, warning that droughts are becoming more frequent, prolonged, and intense due to climate change, posing rising threats to water security, food systems, ecosystems, and economies.
Key Trends
- Global land under drought has doubled since 1900; 40% of the world now experiences frequent and severe droughts.
- Droughts are climate-driven, intensified by rising temperatures, altered rainfall, and faster evaporation.
- With 4°C warming, drought frequency and intensity could be up to 7 times higher than pre-industrial levels.
