Tamil Nadu Declares Dhanushkodi as Greater Flamingo Sanctuary

On 5th June 2025, the Tamil Nadu government declared a 524.7-hectare Greater Flamingo Sanctuary in Dhanushkodi, Ramanathapuram district, marking World Environment Day.

  • Located within the Gulf of Mannar Biosphere Reserve, the sanctuary includes mangroves, mudflats, sand dunes, and marshes—critical for migratory birds and marine biodiversity.
  • The region is an important stopover on the Central Asian Flyway and recorded over 10,700 wetland birds from 128 species in the 2023–2024 survey.
  • Both Greater and Lesser Flamingos, along with herons, egrets, and sandpipers, have been sighted in large numbers.
