Ocean Darkening
- A new study reveals that over 21% of the global ocean has become darker between 2003 and 2022.
- Ocean darkening occurs when sunlight penetrates less deeply into the ocean’s surface, limiting light availability for marine life.
- Key causes include changes in algal bloom patterns, rising sea surface temperatures, and artificial light pollution.
- The study found that in over 9% of the ocean, light penetration has reduced by more than 50 meters; in 2.6% of the ocean, the reduction exceeds 100 meters.
