India Rejects USCIRF Report on Religious Freedom
On 16th March 2026, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) rejected a report by the US Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), calling it “motivated and biased”.
- The MEA stated the report presents a distorted and selective picture of India.
What is USCIRF?
- An independent, bipartisan US federal government agency.
- Monitors religious freedom worldwide.
- Recommends US government actions, including sanctions and policy measures.
Key Observations of the USCIRF Report
- Alleged deterioration of religious freedom in India.
- Recommended designating India as a “Country of Particular Concern (CPC)”.
- Suggested linking US trade and security assistance to religious freedom conditions.
