Himalayan Outpost for Planetary Exploration (HOPE) in Ladakh

On 31st July 2025, ISRO inaugurated the Himalayan Outpost for Planetary Exploration (HOPE) in Ladakh’s Tso Kar Valley, a high-altitude Mars-like environment chosen to test life-support systems and technologies for future lunar and Martian missions.

What is the HOPE Station?

  • A planetary analogue facility with two modules — an 8-metre wide living unit for crew and a 5-metre utility module for equipment and systems.
  • Designed to simulate harsh extraterrestrial conditions including high UV radiation, low atmospheric pressure, extreme cold, and saline permafrost.
  • Being led by ISRO’s Human Space Flight Centre with support from industry partners and top research institutes.
