Starlink has received a Unified Licence to provide satellite internet services in India.

  • Satellite internet delivers connectivity using orbiting satellites or mega-constellations, consisting of hundreds to thousands of satellites at varying altitudes.
  • It functions through a two-segment system: the space segment (satellites with communication payloads enabling transmission, processing, and inter-satellite links in case of LEO constellations) and the ground segment (user terminals and ground stations connected to the internet backbone).
  • Geostationary Orbit (GEO) satellites (≈35,786 km) cover one-third of Earth with wide coverage but high latency, making them less suitable for real-time use. Example: Viasat Global Xpress.
