Rising Cyber Crime Threats: Ramifications, Security Measures, and Preventive Strategies

On 20th August 2025, Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Affairs tabled its 254th report, titled “Cyber Crime – Ramifications, Protection and Prevention”, in the Parliament.

Concerns Highlighted in the Report

Increase in Financial Scams

  • Since August 2019, the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal has recorded 53.9 lakh complaints, recovering around Rs 31,594 crore.
  • Approximately 85% of these cases involve cyber-financial crimes, primarily cryptocurrency transactions and money laundering frauds.

Ransom Demands Made in Digital Assets

  • Ransomware is identified as a major cyber threat, targeting critical infrastructure like hospitals, universities, and research institutions.
