Toxic Trails: Growing Menace of Heavy Metal Pollution in India

In August 2025, a new scientific study conducted by the Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India, found that clouds drifting over the Eastern Himalayas and Western Ghats are carrying toxic heavy metals, posing potential carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic health risks, especially to children.

  • The study, titled "Source-specific multi-pathway human health risk assessment of metals present in clouds over Indian Subcontinent”, warns of alarming public health consequences and environmental degradation in two of India’s most ecologically sensitive regions.
