Environment Protection (Management of Contaminated Sites) Rules, 2025
On 24th July 2025, the Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) notified the Environment Protection (Management of Contaminated Sites) Rules, 2025, under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
Key Provisions of the 2025 Rules
Scope and Applicability
- These rules apply nationwide but exclude:
- Sites under Atomic Energy or Mining Acts
- Marine oil spills
- Solid waste dump sites (unless mixed with hazardous materials).
Identification of Contaminated Sites
- Contamination must first be flagged by local bodies or district administrations based on complaints, monitoring data, or satellite imagery.
- The Centralised Online Portal must record all suspected and probable sites.
