White Dwarf 'Switch On and Off': A Unique Phenomenon
Recently, an international team of scientists observed a white dwarf lose its brightness in 30 minutes. The phenomenon is unique because gaps in brightness have been previously reported but the process usually takes place over a period of several days to months.
About White Dwarfs
- White dwarfs are stars that have used up all the hydrogen they once burned as nuclear fuel.
- A typical white dwarf is approximately the size of the Earth, but has a mass closer to that of the Sun. It has a surface gravity 100,000 times that of Earth.
