Four Indian Wetlands get Ramsar Recognition
Recently, four wetlands from India have been recognized by the Ramsar Secretariat as Ramsar sites. These sites are Thol and Wadhwana from Gujarat, and Sultanpur and Bhindawas from Haryana.
- With the addition of these new sites, there are now 46 Ramsar sites in India and the surface area covered by these sites is 1,083,322 hectares.
The New Ramsar Sites
- Bhindawas Wildlife Sanctuary: The largest wetland in Haryana, Bhindawas Wildlife Sanctuary, located in Jhajjar district, is a human-made freshwater wetland. Over 250 bird species, including more than ten globally threatened species, use the sanctuary throughout the year.
