Revolutionary Drug Delivery System for Rheumatoid Arthritis
On 4th February 2025, the Department of Science & Technology informed that researchers from the Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST), Mohali, have developed an innovative self-actuating drug delivery system that offers targeted, on-demand treatment for rheumatoid arthritis (RA).
Breakthrough in Targeted RA Treatment
- The system uses microspheres loaded with methotrexate, a commonly used anti-rheumatic drug, which is released only when inflammation is detected in the joints.
- Biochemical signals from inflamed joints trigger drug release, ensuring precise treatment while minimizing side effects.
- The formulation responds to elevated levels of specific enzymes (MMP-2 and MMP-9) during RA flare-ups, offering a controlled, pulsatile ....
