Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR) Technology
On 3rd February 2026, DRDO successfully demonstrated Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR) propulsion technology from Chandipur, Odisha. The test places India among a select group of nations with advanced ramjet capability, enabling long-range, high-speed air-to-air missiles.
What is Solid Fuel Ducted Ramjet (SFDR) Technology?
- SFDR is an advanced air-breathing missile propulsion system.
- It uses atmospheric oxygen for combustion instead of carrying an onboard oxidiser (as rockets do).
- Solid fuel is burned in a controlled manner, producing sustained thrust over a longer duration.
How is It Different from Conventional Rocket Motors?
- Rocket motors:
- Burn fuel very rapidly.
- After burnout, the missile coasts without propulsion.
- Ramjet-powered missiles:
- Continue ....
