Step-and-Shoot SPArc
In June 2025, the International Journal of Particle Therapy published the first clinical use of step-and-shoot spot-scanning proton arc therapy (SPArc) to treat adenoid cystic carcinoma.
- Step-and-shoot SPArc precisely targets tumours using proton beams while significantly sparing nearby healthy tissues like the brainstem, spinal canal, and optical structures.
- Compared to SFO-IMPT (the current standard), SPArc reduced radiation to the brainstem by 10%, optical chiasm by 56%, oral cavity by 72%, and spinal canal by 90%.
- In dynamic SPArc, energy and beam delivery points are adjusted in real-time; step-and-shoot follows a pre-set beam-angle sequence in a 180º arc, delivering radiation every ....
