Ghost Pairing
In December 2025, India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology issued an advisory, warning users about a rising cyber threat known as ghost pairing, following multiple cases of WhatsApp accounts being hijacked through social engineering tactics.
- Ghost pairing is a cyber fraud technique in which attackers trick users into unknowingly linking their WhatsApp account to the attacker’s device. This is done without stealing passwords or SIM cards, but by convincing the victim to complete a fake verification or pairing process.
