‘Project Suncatcher’
On 6th November 2025, Google revealed Project Suncatcher, an ambitious research initiative exploring the creation of solar-powered, satellite-based AI data centres in orbit, marking a bold shift towards off-planet computing to address Earth’s growing energy, water, and sustainability challenges.
Why It’s Important
- Project Suncatcher aims to solve one of the biggest limitations of modern AI: the massive energy and cooling demands of terrestrial data centres, which strain power grids, consume millions of litres of water, and accelerate carbon emissions.
- By moving computation to space, Google hopes to tap into near-continuous solar energy and avoid Earth-based environmental constraints.
