Researchers Develop High-Efficiency Tandem Solar Cell
Recently, in a major technological leap for renewable energy, scientists at IIT Bombay’s National Centre for Photovoltaic Research & Education (NCPRE) engineered a tandem solar cell that significantly outperforms conventional silicon technology in both efficiency and durability.
Key Features of the Innovation
- Combines semi-transparent perovskite solar cells layered over traditional silicon cells in a novel 4-terminal (4T) tandem structure.
- Achieves a power conversion efficiency of ~30%, compared to ~20% for current commercial solar panels.
- Designed using indigenously developed halide perovskite semiconductors and compatible with Indian chemical resources.
- Maintains high performance under heat and low-light, overcoming historical perovskite stability limitations.
- Expected operational lifespan extended to ....
