First Carbon-Free Ferrocene Analogue
In May 2026, researchers from Indian Institute of Technology Madras and Indian Institute of Science developed the world’s first stable carbon-free analogue of ferrocene using boron rings and osmium.
What is Ferrocene?
- It is an organometallic compound discovered in the 1950s.
- Its structure consists of Iron atom sandwiched between two carbon rings.
- Important in Catalysis, materials science, medicine.
How was it developed?
- Scientists used computer modelling to identify suitable stabilising metal.
- Osmium selected as the best candidate.
- Final structure confirmed using:
- X-ray diffraction.
- Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR).
