Hantavirus Outbreak
In May 2026, a suspected outbreak of Hantavirus aboard a Netherlands-based cruise ship reportedly led to the death of few people, while others fell ill.
What is Hantavirus?
- Hantavirus is a group of viruses primarily spread by rodents.
- The virus name comes from the Hantan River area of North Korea & South Korea, where the virus was identified in the 1970s.
- Infection commonly occurs when virus particles become airborne during cleaning of contaminated areas.
- In rare cases, human-to-human transmission has also been reported.
How Does Hantavirus Spread?
- Main carriers include rats & mice.
- Infection can occur through:
- Breathing contaminated air.
