Hantavirus Outbreak

In May 2026, a suspected outbreak of Hantavirus aboard a Netherlands-based cruise ship reportedly led to the death of few people, while others fell ill.

What is Hantavirus?

  • Hantavirus is a group of viruses primarily spread by rodents.
  • The virus name comes from the Hantan River area of North Korea & South Korea, where the virus was identified in the 1970s.
  • Infection commonly occurs when virus particles become airborne during cleaning of contaminated areas.
  • In rare cases, human-to-human transmission has also been reported.

How Does Hantavirus Spread?

  • Main carriers include rats & mice.
