ISRO Study Reveals New Insights into Moon’s Lunar Regolith
On 18th May 2026, scientists from Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) published findings from the Vikram Lander’s “Hop” experiment and the Chandra’s Surface Thermophysical Experiment (ChaSTE) conducted during the Chandrayaan-3 mission.
What is Lunar Regolith?
- Lunar Regolith is the layer of loose, broken rocky material covering the Moon’s surface.
- It consists of crushed rocks, fine dust particles & glass-like abrasive shards.
- It is formed due to meteorite impacts over billions of years.
Key Findings of the Study
- Top 2-6 cm of lunar regolith found to be highly porous, sticky and cohesive. Regolith acts like a thermal blanket trapping heat.
