SMILE Space Mission
On 19th May 2026, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and the European Space Agency (ESA) jointly launched the SMILE satellite from French Guiana to study interactions between solar wind and Earth’s magnetic field and improve space weather forecasting.
Objectives of the SMILE Mission
- Capture first X-ray images of Earth’s magnetosphere interacting with solar wind.
- Improve understanding of Auroras, magnetic interactions around Earth.
Key Features of the Mission
- Positioned about 1.21 lakh km above Earth’s North Pole.
- Mission life around 3 years.
- Carried four scientific instruments.
Major Instruments
- Soft X-ray Imager (SXI) developed by European Space Agency (ESA).
