WHO Declares Ebola Outbreak a PHEIC

On 16th May 2026, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC).

What is a PHEIC?

  • WHO’s highest level of global health alert under International Health Regulations (IHR).
  • Declared when a disease outbreak:
    • Is serious and unusual.
    • Risks international spread.
    • Requires coordinated global response.

What is Ebola?

  • Severe viral disease caused by Ebola virus group.
  • Zoonotic disease transmitted from:
    • Fruit bats.
    • Non-human primates.
  • Human-to-human spread occurs through blood and bodily fluids & contaminated surfaces.
  • Outbreak linked to Bundibugyo ebolavirus.

WHO Response Measures

  • Rapid isolation and supportive treatment.
  • Contact tracing and disease ....
