Greenhouse Gas Emission Intensity Targets Draft, 2025

On 17th April 2025, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change released a draft notification setting greenhouse gas emission intensity (GEI) reduction targets for two years starting 2025–26, covering 282 industrial entities under the Carbon Credit Trading Scheme, 2023.

Provisions of the Draft Notification

  • Sector-Wide Emission Targets: The draft mandates intensity-based GEI reduction across industries like aluminium, cement, and others—marking India’s first sector-wide decarbonisation framework.
  • Mandatory Compliance & Carbon Market Linkage: Non-compliant entities must purchase carbon credits via India’s carbon market; failure to comply leads to penalties by the Central Pollution Control Board.
