First NGOPV ‘Shachi’ Launched in Goa
On 31st March 2026, the first Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV), ‘Shachi’, was launched at Goa Shipyard Limited in Goa in the presence of senior Indian Navy officials.
- The vessel is the first of 11 NGOPVs being built indigenously at GSL (Goa) and Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers, Kolkata.
- These ships will support multi-domain operations including surveillance, search and rescue, anti-piracy, and protection of offshore assets.
- The NGOPVs will enhance the Navy’s operational capabilities and replace older Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs/NOPVs).
- ‘Shachi’, named after a figure from Indian mythology, signifies assistance and support.
