IOC Mandates SRY Gene Screening for Female Athletes
Recently, the International Olympic Committee announced mandatory SRY gene screening for women athletes to determine eligibility in female categories, aiming to ensure fairness in elite sports.
What is the SRY Gene?
- SRY = Sex-determining Region Y.
- Located on the Y chromosome.
- Triggers male biological development (testes, testosterone production).
What is the New Rule?
- Mandatory SRY gene test for women athletes in elite international sports.
- Applies to Olympics and global competitions.
- Refusal → ineligible for IOC events.
How is the Test Conducted?
- Simple saliva or cheek swab test.
- Lab analysis takes about one week.
- Usually a one-time test unless error suspected.
