IVRI Produces Indigenous Sahiwal Calves Using IVF Technology
Recently, the Indian Veterinary Research Institute successfully produced five Sahiwal calves using advanced OPU-IVF-ET technology, marking a breakthrough in livestock genetic improvement.
What is OPU-IVF-ET Technology?
- OPU (Ovum Pick-Up): Eggs collected using ultrasound guidance.
- IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation): Eggs fertilised in laboratory.
- ET (Embryo Transfer): Embryos implanted into surrogate animals.
Key Features of the Breakthrough
- First successful use in indigenous Sahiwal cattle.
- All calves born from single donor cow.
- Completed within normal gestation (~9 months).
- Includes both male and female calves.

- Eggs collected from high-yield donor cow.
