Hypersonic Technology with Scramjet Ground Test
On 21st January 2025, the Defence Ministry informed that the country has taken a significant step forward in the development of next-generation hypersonic technology with the successful ground test of the Supersonic Combustion Ramjet (Scramjet) engine for 120 seconds.
Understanding Scramjet Technology
A Supersonic Combustion Ramjet (Scramjet) is an air-breathing jet engine designed to operate efficiently at speeds above Mach 5 (five times the speed of sound).
- Difference from Ramjets: Unlike conventional ramjets, which slow down incoming air before combustion, scramjets allow supersonic airflow throughout the engine, making combustion more challenging but allowing for sustained hypersonic speeds.
