Aditya-L1 Provides New Insights on Earth’s Magnetic Shield
On 10th January 2026, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) said its Aditya-L1 solar mission has provided important new insights into how powerful solar storms disturb Earth’s magnetic shield, also known as the magnetosphere.
Aditya-L1: Position and Scientific Focus
- Aditya-L1 is India’s first dedicated solar observatory.
- It is positioned at the Lagrange Point-1 (L1), about 1.5 million km from Earth, where the gravitational forces of the Earth and Sun balance.
- From this stable location, the spacecraft gets a continuous, uninterrupted view of the Sun.
- Its main objective is to study:
- Solar flares
- Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs)
- Solar wind and plasma behaviour
- Sun-Earth interactions that drive space weather
