BSL-4 Containment Facility in Gandhinagar
On 13th January 2026, the Union Home Minister laid the foundation stone of a Bio-Safety Level-4 (BSL-4) Containment Facility and laboratory in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, marking a major step to strengthen India’s health security, outbreak preparedness and biotechnology capacity.
What is a BSL-4 Facility?
- BSL-4 (Bio-Safety Level-4) is the highest level of biological containment.
- Designed for research on extremely dangerous and highly infectious pathogens that often lack effective vaccines or treatments.
- Requires:
- Maximum containment architecture
- Full-body positive-pressure suits
- Dedicated air, waste and decontamination systems
- Used for diagnostics, vaccine & therapeutic development, and rapid outbreak response.

- Ebola virus
- Marburg virus
- Nipah virus
