France Discovers World's Largest Natural Hydrogen Reserve

In March 2025, French scientists discovered a 46-million-ton reserve of natural hydrogen in Folschviller, Moselle, which could revolutionise the global clean energy industry.

  • The discovery, valued at $92 billion, was made by researchers from GeoRessources laboratory and CNRS while searching for methane.
  • Found at a depth of 1,250 meters (4,101 feet), this "white hydrogen" is a naturally occurring, carbon-free fuel that does not require energy-intensive production processes.
  • The deposit could replace over 50% of the world's annual gray hydrogen production while eliminating environmental costs associated with fossil fuel-based hydrogen.
