North East Institute Develops Bio-Based Surfactant for Cosmetics

Recently, the Institute of Advanced Study in Science and Technology (IASST), under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), announced the synthesis of a novel bio-based surfactant with antibacterial and cleansing properties.

What are Surfactants and Biosurfactants?

  • Surfactants are compounds that reduce surface tension, allowing oil and water to mix.
  • Widely used in soaps, shampoos, creams, detergents, and medicines.
  • Most commercial surfactants are synthetic and may be toxic or non-biodegradable.
  • Biosurfactants are naturally produced by microorganisms and are biodegradable and eco-friendly.

  • Produced using probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum JBC5.
