On 6th March 2026, Union Minister for Earth Sciences and Science & Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh reviewed progress of the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC) project in Kavaratti, Lakshadweep.
What is Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC)?
- A renewable energy technology that uses the temperature difference between warm surface seawater and cold deep-sea water.
- The temperature gradient is used to generate electricity through a turbine-generator system.
- The generated energy powers desalination systems to produce drinking water.
- Suitable for tropical ocean regions with stable temperature gradients.
Objectives of the Project
- Provide sustainable drinking water supply to Lakshadweep islands.
- Generate clean and continuous renewable energy.
