Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4)

On 26th June 2025, Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla became the first Indian to enter the International Space Station (ISS) aboard the SpaceX Dragon as part of Axiom Mission 4 (Ax-4).

Why is this historic?

  • India joined an elite group of countries — the US, Russia, China — that have demonstrated autonomous space docking capability.
  • Group Captain Shukla, a Gaganyaan astronaut-designate, served as mission pilot on the Dragon capsule.
  • This was the first step toward India’s human spaceflight mission (Gaganyaan), expected no earlier than 2026.
  • The mission was coordinated between ISRO, NASA, and Axiom Space, with India investing Rs. 500 crore.
