Global Guideline for Managing Sickle Cell Disease in Pregnancy

On 19th June 2025, the World Health Organization (WHO) has published its first global guideline on how to manage sickle cell disease (SCD) during pregnancy — a growing public health challenge with potentially life-threatening consequences for both mothers and babies.

What is Sickle Cell Disease (SCD)?

SCD is a hereditary blood disorder where red blood cells are abnormally shaped like sickles or crescents. These misshapen cells can:

  • Block blood flow
  • Cause severe anaemia, pain crises, frequent infections
  • Lead to serious complications like strokes, sepsis, and organ failure
