Skin Health Gets Global Attention
On 24th May 2025, the 78th World Health Assembly unanimously adopted a historic resolution: ‘Skin diseases as a global public health priority’ — the first of its kind.
What does the resolution recognise?
- Skin diseases affect 1.9 billion people worldwide, yet remain underfunded.
- Often dismissed as cosmetic, they can cause severe stigma, disability, and economic loss.
- The resolution pushes for global policy inclusion, research funding, and access to care.
Why is it urgent?
- Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) suffer most from neglected skin diseases.
- Conditions like psoriasis, fungal infections, and vitiligo are common, stigmatizing, and under-treated.
