India Demonstrates Quantum Entanglement-Based Secure Communication
On 16th June 2025, Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and IIT Delhi successfully demonstrated India’s first free-space quantum secure communication over a distance exceeding 1 km using quantum entanglement.
Achievement
- Quantum key distribution (QKD) using quantum entanglement via free-space optical link on IIT Delhi campus.
- Achieved a secure key rate of ~240 bits/sec with a quantum bit error rate <7%.
- Demonstration conducted under DRDO project on photonic technologies for free-space QKD.
Why Quantum Entanglement Matters
- More secure than traditional “prepare-and-measure” QKD methods.
- Ensures detection of any eavesdropping — quantum state collapses if intercepted.
- Offers device-independent security, even if hardware is imperfect or tampered ....
