Rules Governing OCI Cardholders
In December 2024, the Ministry of External Affairs confirmed that there are no changes to the rules governing Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) cardholders, dispelling concerns about their reclassification as foreigners.The OCI scheme was introduced in 2005 by amending the Citizenship Act, 1955.
Eligibility
- OCI status is granted to foreign nationals, except those from Pakistan or Bangladesh, who have ancestral ties to India. This includes individuals who were citizens of India after January 26, 1950, or whose ancestors belonged to territories that became part of India post-independence.
