State Finance Commissions (SFCs)
In November 2024, the Ministry of Panchayati Raj confirmed that all states, except Arunachal Pradesh, have established State Finance Commissions (SFCs). This development follows the Fifteenth Finance Commission’s push for strengthening local governance ahead of the Finance Commission’s Conclave on ‘Devolution to Development 2024’, held on November 14, 2024. Gujarat became the latest state to form its SFC on November 4, 2024.
About SFCs
Constitutional Basis
- Established under the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendments (1992).
- Aims to strengthen local self-governance by giving constitutional recognition to Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).
