Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger Announce Exit from ICC

On 22nd September 2025, the three military-led West African nations declared withdrawal from the International Criminal Court (ICC), denouncing it as a “tool of neocolonial repression” after over two decades of membership.

Strategic and Regional Realignments

  • Alliance of Sahel States: Having already quit ECOWAS, the three countries consolidated under the Alliance of Sahel States, reducing Western defence ties and fostering closer relations with Russia.
  • Rejection of ICC Role: Their joint statement accused the ICC of failing to prosecute war crimes, crimes against humanity, crimes of aggression, and genocide.
