WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies Enters into Force
On 15th September 2025, the WTO Agreement on Fisheries Subsidies entered into force after two-thirds of WTO members submitted instruments of acceptance. The agreement was first adopted at the WTO’s 12th Ministerial Conference on 17th June 2022.
Background
- Overfishing Crisis: In 2021, 35.5% of global fish stocks were overfished, compared with just 10% in 1974.
- Harmful Subsidies: Governments spend around US$ 22 billion annually to expand fishing capacity, worsening overcapacity and stock depletion.
- IUU Fishing Losses: Illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing causes global economic losses of up to US$ 50 billion each year.
