River Rejuvenation Projects in India: Challenges & Imperatives
On 23rd September 2025, the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) released a report, titled “Polluted River Stretches for Restoration of Water Quality”, identifying and prioritising polluted river segments for targeted rejuvenation efforts.
Major Highlights from the Report
Marginal Improvement in PRS
- The number of polluted river stretches (PRS) decreased from 311 to 296, covering 271 rivers across 32 states and Union Territories.
- üA polluted river stretch refers to two or more polluted locations on a river in a continuous sequence. Stretches where the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) exceeds 3 milligrams/litre (mg/L) are identified as polluted stretches by CPCB.
