India Adds Two New Ramsar Sites
Ahead of World Wetlands Day on 2nd February 2026, India added 2 new sites to the Ramsar list of Wetlands of International Importance, taking the country’s total to 98.
What is the Ramsar Convention?
- An international treaty (1971, Ramsar, Iran) for the conservation and wise use of wetlands.
- Countries identify wetlands meeting ecological criteria (e.g. rare species, bird habitats) and nominate them to the Ramsar Secretariat.
- Once listed, sites must be managed sustainably to prevent ecological degradation.
Description of the Newly Added Sites
Chhari-Dhand Wetland (Kutch, Gujarat)
